Tattoo and giving blood? - blood donation locations

I have a tattoo in December, but I read the brochure in the gift that you can not give blood for at least a year after you get a tattoo. Is that true? I like to help donate blood (I feel like I'm somebody, even if I do not know) what I want, if possible. I called the location of the blood donation before you leave, but that does not answer or asked them =) thank you!
